GATE CITY — A man accused of attempted murder on the West Coast has been arrested following an apparent crash and foot pursuit in the woods of Southwest Virginia.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday police were notified of a suspicious vehicle and person along Double Ford Road in the Duffield community. Responding deputies spotted a small pickup stuck in the creek, with a man standing on the other side of the water.

Officers crossed the creek to speak with the suspect, identifying him as John David Sexton. When a check of his information revealed felony warrants in Oregon, Sexton allegedly darted into the woods.

Following a foot pursuit, Sexton, of Cave Junction, Ore., was apprehended without further incident. His alleged crimes in Oregon include attempted murder and unlawful use of a firearm.

Sexton is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield. He is awaiting extradition back to Oregon, where authorities have a preset bond of $500,000. Charges are also pending against him in Scott County.
